about karen davis
Growing up in New Orleans I gained my appreciation for design and style. The city, like its famous food, is a mélange of colors and flavors, rhythms and beats. It was here that I learned that the sense of “home” comes not from a building but from the lives lived within that building.
After graduating college with a degree in marketing, I took a position with Laura Ashley Home. There I helped clients decorate their own interiors and lead decorating seminars. This allowed me to connect with my clients and pull together a more personal collection.
Wanting a broader experience, I relocated to Houston TX and worked with Ralph Lauren Home. It was while working with Ralph Lauren in Houston TX that I met my prince charming. Shortly after getting married we moved to Paris, France, giving me the opportunity to travel throughout Europe. While in Paris, I studied Interior Design at The Paris American Academy, further expanding my experience on how to personalize interiors through furnishings, color and accessories.
While living in Paris I was dependant upon public transport for the first time in my life. I learned there’ll always be another bus coming along in a few minutes so there’s no need to rush. Take the time to take in your surroundings, understand where you are and where you want to go, plot out a course, and then take action. This also happens to be the way I prefer to approach a new interior design project.
After moving back to Houston, I took a position with F. Schumacher, a trade-only fabric showroom. There I worked with Interior Designers on their decorating projects. In 2005 I went on to form The Room Planner, using my experience decorating interiors that reflect each client's own taste and style. I trained under designer and author Lauri Ward, becoming a certified Gold Member of The Interior Redecorators Network. Many clients have pieces that are very special to them so I always try to include these in the design. With my growing design business I recently expanded and renamed it Karen Davis Design.
